Nigeria’s most enduring hip hop act Weird MC is back in the news again.
The bestselling rapper, songwriter, performer and entrepreneur who has been working on her third studio album for years, premiered two singles Jehovah (Da Paper Song) and Don’t Stop (Se were) at 09:07AM on November 9. Both singles feature Switch and Dr Pat respectively; and were produced by Legendary Beatz.
Weird MC’s label is called 0907 – named after her birth day July 9. And this is not the first time she’ll be playing with the 9th day in premiering her songs or videos. This time around, her reps say, the new singles were premiered globally on 9 radio stations and 9 websites at 9:07AM on November 9.

The new singles are the final set of materials from her pending third album Broken Silence. Earlier singles include Riranwo, Step up and Happy Day – both already bonafide hits and chart toppers on both radio and TV. The album is scheduled for a late 2010 release.



Born Adeshola Idowu, Weird MC first gained national recognition in 1997 with her hit single 'Allen Avenue' which won her the award for the Best Hip Hop act at the first edition of the Awards for Musical Excellence (Amen awards) in October 2008, after which she went on a long sabbatical. She made a comeback in 2005 with her monster hit 'Ijo ya'. Her influences include Miriam Makeba, Femi Kuti, Lauren Hill, Jimi Hendrix and others.
Her first album Simply Weird was Nigeria's first full-length rap album, earning her a position as a pioneer of the hip hop industry in Nigeria. And when many were expecting her to fall below standard with her belated sophomore album After Da Storm, she took the game to a whole new level, establishing herself as one of the continent’s most amazing performers and a multi-faceted entertainer. With the new achievements came brand statements like the elongated ‘gele’ which remained her signature for years.

LAGBAJA’S NEW ALBUMS HITS THE STREETS!

The much-anticipated 2 simultaneous albums from Africano musician Lagbaja are now ready for release.
Titled ‘Paradise’ and ‘Sharp Sharp’, the albums will be released into the Nigerian market on Monday May 4, 2009.
As is characteristic of Lagbaja, all tracks on both albums have various slants and characters, but the common denominator remains the traditional African drums. Lagbaja’s saxophones also feature prominently on the new recordings; and it’s the first time since ‘Cest Un African Thing’ (1996) that the saxophone is taking such prominence on Lagbaja’s studio recordings.
Listeners will hear Lagbaja doing remarkable sax solos on ‘Paradise’ and ‘Sharp Sharp’ – songs like “I Rho Whe”, ‘Bling Bling Panda’ and “Sobolation” have the saxophone blazing while tracks like ‘Paradise’ and ‘Sharp Sharp’ actually have the saxophone in the intro section of the songs dueting with the lead vocals.
The traditional African drums- the mainframe of the Africano genre- is also conspicuously present throughout both albums. And, interestingly, most of the songs were recorded live. Lagbaja is an advocate of live music; believing musicians should play their instruments as opposed to the recently prevalent practice of completely ceding music production to the computer.
The albums were recorded in Lagos at Motherlan’ Studios; and in the USA at Bennett Studios. All the songs were mixed in different US studios, including Studio Crash (Pennsylvania), Bennett Studios (NJ) and Studio 4 (Pennsylvania).
Apart from mixing several of the songs on the album, Grammy award-winning engineer Dave Kowalski also recorded the Salsa version of Lagbaja’s composition ‘Deja A Mi Gente Quedarse’ (Let My People Stay) at Bennett Studios. The cut features some of the top Latin music players of the New York scene.

LAGBAJA TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM BY MONTH-END!

We’ve been waiting for long. We’ve been wondering un-end. We’ve worried till we’re weary – when will we lay our hands on another Lagbaja album? When will the masked musician and his band bless fans with another body of work? This year? Next year? Or the year after the next?

Well, we can all now heave a sigh of relief, because Lagbaja has confirmed that a new album – the first since his 2005 release Africano – is ready, and about to hit the streets.

According to a statement released by his publicist Ayeni Adekunle on Monday April 6, the new album, which comes in two CDs, will be officially released in Nigeria before the end of April.

‘‘I’m glad to tell you, brothers and sisters, that our new album is ready’’, Lagbaja said in Lagos this week. ‘‘The world is going through different challenges right now, but the journey continues. We’ll continue to make good music and preach the gospel of Africa to the rest of the world’’.

Lagbaja’s eponymous debut album was released to national acclaim in 1993. He followed with Cest Un African Thing in 1996, and in 2000 he did what was hitherto thought impossible when he dropped a three-in-one album titled ME, WE and ABAMI respectively. The simultaneous three-part release further enriched his repertoire of hits and timeless pieces, endeared him to even more critics, and won him a million-and-one converts. His most recent album – Africano… the mother of groove- was released to critical acclaim in 2005.

Once again, Lagbaja is releasing more than once album simultaneously. ‘‘We have two CDs coming out this time. Our fans deserve it, especially having waited for this long’’, He said. A third, the long-anticipated Africano Party (now remixed) will follow later in the year.
