SPOTLIGHT ON KENYAN MUSIC 2009

Following the highly successful 1st concert on Friday, 19th June in the Alliance Française gardens with performances from Makadem, Cheptab, Benta the Lizard and Abbi, in front of over 800 afro-fusion fans, the forthcoming concert promises even more entertainment.
The line-up includes:
Peter Wambugu, whose soulful track ‘Yatima’ (orphan) had audiences on the 2008 Spotlight national tour in Machakos, Mombasa, Lamu, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru Eldoret and Meru riveted to their spot. Peter will be previewing his first solo album ‘Tunaumia’;
The Kalenjin queen Doris Chepchumba, former vocalist with the Maroon Commandos, whose song ‘Kipla’ continues to dominate many FM stations, her deep resonating voice is sure to enchant;
The Ukooflani artist Alai K who is increasingly straddling the afro-fusion terrain with his unique blend of Kiswahili afro-soul;
and the sensational Achien’g Abura, singer, composer and pianist and Kenya’s leading afro-jazz artiste, whose signature powerful voice will team up with the above artists for a couple of original compositions not to be missed.

2009 Spotlight on Kenyan music programme is a consolidation of the gains made over the last 4 years. Deserving musicians, those who have shown ability, self-belief, passion and determination, will receive additional support in 2009 to further expose and promote their music.
Artists selected for this support in 2009 are: George Mutinda, Makadem, Alai K, Ingosi Jnr, Peter Wambugu, Juma Tutu, Michel Ongaro (2005), Ronald Ontiri, Zippy Okoth, Sauti, Teto Tutuma (2006), Cheptab, Benta Agenga, Doris Chepchumba (2007) and Ben Kisinja & Chebin Band, Bismilahi Gargar, Katana bin Kalama, Koko Band, Walter Koga, Fadhili Itulya (2008).
Spotlight on Kenyan music continues to showcase refreshing Kenyan talent and musical riches while at the same time celebrating the country’s musical and cultural diversity through the most democratic of art forms that is music.
This Friday’s concert will feature Makadem, Benta Ageng’a (the Lizard) and Cheptab (who has just released here first album ‘Tilenyun’) who will be joined by afro-fusion maestro Abbi.
