African Heritage festival coming

On Sunday, March 29, from 6 to 11 pm, at the Hotel Intercontinental, 400 invited guests will experience the continent’s most spectacular show – a living museum of Africa’s heritage in costumes, textiles, dance, shape and sound. The African Heritage Design Company will bring together the living treasures of over 16 of Africa’s richest cultures during a performance featuring Kenya’s finest musicians, dancers, acrobats, designers and models- - custodians of the legacy of culture. The show presents the richness of Africa’s 2lst Century society from a unique awareness of the past. The evening will feature Kenya’s African Heritage Festival, perfected over three decades of shows and tours by African Heritage promoting Kenya and Africa, while the second part of the show highlights the leading fashion designers of Kenya over the past forty years. The finale is a shimmering collection of beadwork by Kenyan women. Nyatiti master soloist Ayub Ogada (Job Seda), Kenya’s most famous international musician will perform before and during the show. The show ends with a stirring “Orutu” dance with traditional Luo musical instruments from Western Kenya. Plans are now underway to take the show on a tour of America in honour of the first African American President of the US, Barack Obama. This show is a preview of the proposed AH tour of the US.
The day will also be a celebration of African Heritage, and the legacy of two of its most famous collectors, who spent their lives preserving, promoting and protecting African culture, the late Joseph and Sheila Murumbi. Joseph Murumbi was Kenya’s first foreign Minister and the nation’s second Vice President.
