Famed African band, Gangbé Brass from Benin are scheduled to give two performances in Nairobi on April 24 and Mombasa the following day, both at Alliance Française buildings in both cities. Gangbé Brass Band will not fail to delight the audiences with their unique brand of voodoo rhythms married to new musical traditions including jazz, soul, blues and funk. The band was created in 1994 when 8 musicians, all from Cotonou-Benin, came together. These young jazz musicians had been playing in different groups, before creating this unusual fusion of traditional styles. The word “gangbe” means, “sound of metal” in the Fon language.
They take traditional rhythms, and invigorate them with jazz harmonies and the fusion reveals as much as possible of the musical tradition, while giving a western tone. They sing in vernacular language about life in general, political injustices and the tribulations of women.
Gangbe has released three albums: Gangbe (1998), Togbe (2001), and Whendo (2004), and tours extensively in Europe and North America.
